Reporting Lines
Under the direct supervision of the FAOR, India, technical guidance of the Lead Technical Officer and in close collaboration with other consultants and counterparts, the consultant will provide technical inputs on agronomy.
Technical Focus
Expertise in agronomy.
Tasks and responsibilities
The consultant will undertake the following duties:
    • Take lead and provide technical inputs in the curriculum development, building upon existing training curricula available with the project teams for adaption to the furthest extent and suggest improvements as deemed necessary;
    • Design training materials on fruits and nuts nursery for use of Master Trainers, block/ circle and village level officers, and farmers;
    • Work with the project staff to develop monitoring protocols and tools for data collection and assist the Team Leader in ensuring complete documentation and report writing on all the activities in the ToMT;
    • Provide technical backstopping support to Jhum Resource Management Committee (JRMC), lead farmers and FIGs for promotion of improved jhum and settled agriculture
    • Provide technical support to lead farmers and FIG farmers under better jhum practices  to promote fertility enhancing crop, improved traditional varieties of seed, and nursery management
    • Provide technical backstopping support under current jhum improvement to plantation of the fertility improving leguminous plants on contour bunds (perpendicular to the incline); and wild sunflower , and stylo  in the fields
    • Provide technical support under fallow jhum management to promote seeding the fallows with both, annual and perennial legume cover crops.
    • Provide technical support to better agronomic aspects which will include better varieties and quality seeds (high germination, vigour, insect and disease free) of the preferred crops such as rice, maize, chillies, ginger / turmeric etc., introduction of quality protein maize, arrowroot and tikhur, planting high value horticulture crops such as banana and promotion of linear planting
    • Contribute technical inputs to the elaboration of environment and social impact assessments for the improved jhum and settled agriculture practices to be implemented
    • Work with the MIS expert to develop monitoring protocols and tools for data collection and document ToMT activities;
    • Liaise as needed with the SOCRAN; and
    • Any other work as requested by FAO.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
  • Post Graduate degree in forestry, agriculture sciences or equivalent.
  • Five years of relevant experience of working with government agencies and of working in development projects
  • Working knowledge of English, Knowledge of Nagamese is desirable.
  • National of India or resident in the country.

Technical/Functional Skills
  • At least ten-year experience in agro-forestry, especially in community forest conservation and community conservation area.
  • Previous experience with projects financed from International Financial Institutions (World Bank, IFAD, Asian Development Bank etc.)
  • Previous experience in working with state government of Nagaland will be desired
  • Experience in organic certification and spice processing is an advantage.
