Scientific Officer – Values Chain / Agricultural-Livestock Systems ICRISAT Niamey, Niger

ICRISAT seeks applications for the position of Scientific Officer in the commodity value chain agriculture-livestock systems. In the Sahel, crop-livestock systems play a particularly important role in ensuring food security, resilience and income generation for the highly vulnerable livelihood systems of smallholders through intensified fodder and livestock production related to markets. ICRISAT collaborates with national agricultural and extension research agencies, NGOs, and local and foreign higher education institutions to develop technologies, create markets and improve value chains around agricultural and livestock products. A research assistant is expected to work on agriculture-livestock value chains.
ICRISAT is a non-profit, non-political organization that conducts agricultural research for development in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa with a wide array of partners throughout the world. ICRISAT and its partners help empower those living in the semi-arid tropics, especially smallholder farmers, to overcome poverty, hunger, malnutrition and a degraded environment through more efficient and profitable agriculture. ICRISAT is headquartered in Patancheru near Hyderabad, India, with two regional hubs and five country offices in sub-Saharan Africa. 

Job Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the establishment and animation of stakeholder platforms, concatenation, transfer, clearance and analysis of data collected at all actors level of the value chain of products and actors of the agriculture-livestock sector (producers, traders, consumers, processors, input/fertilizers suppliers and other actors)
  • Analyze data, generate interpretation charts and graphs and other information for all stakeholders in the target product value chain
  • Map the different actors in the value chain and analyze the interrelations between actors, product flows and information
  • Analysis of the profit margins of the various actors of the value chain
  • Perform bibliographic searches and write reports
  • Perform any other task deemed necessary
  • At least a Master’s degree in animal science, animal nutrition, agronomy or equivalent
  • Knowledge of value chains of agricultural products
  • Experience in agronomic experimentation, database collection and management and data analysis
  • Knowledge of software such as GENSTAT, CSPro, Stata and SPSS is desired
  • Excellent knowledge of French and a working knowledge of English.
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position for three years, renewable based on the performance of the incumbent, funding availability, and the Institute’s continuing need for the position.
