CIMMYT is seeking an experienced Agricultural Development Officer (ADO) assist innovative USAID funded agricultural R4D project focused on wheat blast/CSISA PIII activities (ICC: C0085.01) in, south-west and southern Bangladesh. Project activities are being implemented in collaboration with Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI), Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) and will integrate and build upon synergies created with the already operational Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia-Mechanization and Irrigation (CSISA-MI) and Climate Services for Resilient Development (CSRD) projects in Bangladesh. As ADO you will work to support an applied research and extension program in partnership with the public and other private sector partners centered on the collection of data with smartphone attached small microscope for validating the wheat blast forecasting model through surveillance study, adaptive trials and dissemination of blast related technologies and national recommendations to the GO-NGO partners and farmers in the blast affected areas of the country.
The successful applicant will join the multi-institutional and interdisciplinary team that coordinates different R4D projects in the country with partnership of different International and National Institutes. Please refer to our website for more information: The position will be based in Dhaka, Jashore, Rajshahi, Faridpur/Barishal. As per requirement of the project temporary posting can be given in Dinajpur/Jashore to assist collection of data from trials and laboratory analysis of collected blast samples.
Specific duties of this position include:
  • Initially update with wheat and wheat blast disease informations, disease symptoms and their differences with other disease symptoms.
  • Assist Cropping Systems Agronomists and senior ADOs in selecting suitable sites for adaptive trials and demonstrations on wheat blast and other CSISA trials in collaboration with local GO, NGO and private sector partners.
  • Identify and collect data on spore counts
  • Provide assistance to senior technical coordinator/supervisors planning for trials and demonstrations, development of training modules, outreach materials that will support farmers, local service providers (LSPs), extension agents, and private sector partners..
  • Conduct participatory adaptive trials, demonstrations, field days, on wheat and maize based cropping systems in conservation agriculture systems
  • Collect data from trials, demos, etc. carefully with the assistance of project field staff following the advice of senior technical coordinator and local supervisors.
  • Enter and maintain collected data in excel data sheet regularly and send to supervisors regularly when asked
  • Conduct trainings and related capacity building activities for farmers, LSPs, private and public sector partners on wheat blast and other project technologies for sustainable cropping intensification
  • Collaborate with CIMMYT’s international and national scientists giving feedbacks from farmers’ fields regarding wheat blast and other activities
  • Mentor the work of project-based field staff working to implement the use project technologies
  • Support the work of the project’s monitoring and evaluation team.
  • Collaborate projects communication and training consultants supplying technical information through supervisors
  • Help to develop quarterly field work plans with associated budgets, and assure their proper and successful implementation
  • Assisit supervisor and technical coordinator writing different reports giving feedback from field.
  • Identify and collect data on spore counts’
  • Complete any other activities advised by supervisors for the benefit of the project.
We are seeking candidates with the following academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:
  • A B.Sc Ag. (Hons) degree is the basic qualification for the post, however a masters degree in plant pathology/ agronomy/ breeding will be preferred.
  • Practical working knowledge on wheat/maize based cropping systems under conservation agriculture in the farmers’ field will be useful additional qualification.
  • Working experience in GO/NGO organizations in the farmers field will be preferred.
  • Good inter personal communication skills with farmers, agricultural service providers, extension and outreach professionals, and private sector partners are preferred
  • Strong proficiency in written and spoken English will be appreciated.
  • Competence with common computer software packages (MS Word, Excel, Power point, internet and email use), for communications, data management, and statistical analysis is needed
  • Experience working with both public and private sector organizations on agricultural systems are additional advantage
  • Should be able to drive motorcycles with a valid driving license for the same.
  • Experience in training farmers, LSPs, and other GO, NGO and private sectors persons is highly appreciated
The position is for an initial fixed-term contract of one year with a three-month initial probationary period, after which further employment is subject to performance and the continued availability of funds. Salary range is negotiable. Other benefits will be admissible according to CIMMYT rules and regulations for USAID funded projects.
